A Bright Year of Celebration Begins at L’Orignal Old Jail

On Friday, January 3, a year of celebration was set in motion as new floodlights illuminated the L’Orignal Old Jail and courthouse. This marks the beginning of a historic year, as the site celebrates its 200th anniversary in 2025.

Built in 1825, the L’Orignal Old Jail is the oldest jail in Ontario, operating until 1998 before becoming a museum. The attached courthouse remains in operation, continuing its legacy of justice. In addition to this milestone, 2025 also marks the 175th anniversary of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell (UCPR), with both anniversaries being celebrated together.

Champlain Township Mayor Normand Riopel and UCPR Warden Yves Laviolette led the official lighting ceremony, emphasizing the importance of preserving local history. The newly installed lighting enhances the jail’s presence in the community while respecting its architectural heritage.

“This will be a very festive year for L’Orignal,” said Patrimoine L’Orignal-Longueuil Heritage President Louise Bédard. A variety of events are planned throughout 2025 to celebrate the rich history of the site and region. Join us in celebrating this historic milestone!
